Kapil Jangid

Kapil Jangid is a visual artist based between Baroda and New Delhi whose work critically engages with the overlapping realities of migration, architecture, memory, and the socio-political entanglements of built environments in India. Born to a family of migrant carpenters from Rajasthan and raised in Bajwa, an informal settlement on the periphery of Vadodara, Kapil grew up between the expansive industrial compounds of oil corporations and the organic sprawl of unplanned dwellings. These layered experiences of space and displacement have deeply informed his practice. His works often examine the psychological and political landscapes of India's changing cities, where vernacular structures are effaced by imposed order, and where the aspirations of urbanisation obscure the dignity of survival.

Kapil works across sculpture, drawing, assemblage, and photography, using materials such as concrete, scavenged metal, wood, ceramic tiles, and found objects. These tactile elements form minimalist structures that resemble fragments of vanished homes or half-formed cityscapes; echoes of both permanence and transience. The repeated motif of “Khalo Ghar” (empty house) recurs in his work, standing in for the homes left behind in villages and towns across India by those chasing uncertain futures in urban sprawls. His visual language is shaped by the precision of carpentry, an inheritance from his father, and builds toward a quiet yet deeply political meditation on class, labour, and the invisibilised stories embedded in architectural forms.

Since 2015, Kapil has been steadily exhibiting across India. His recent works have been showcased in Immerse for the Young Collectors Programme, curated by Satyam Yadav and supported by India Art Fair 2024; Permanent Conference, curated by Shristi Sainani at Gallery Nvya, New Delhi (2023); Embark at Ark Foundation for the Arts, Baroda (2023); Surface 07 at Artbuzz Studio, New Delhi (2022); and in the international collaborative publication The Elephant in the Room by Conflictorium – Museum of Conflict, India and Stroom Den Haag, Netherlands (2022). He was also part of Immerse (2022), a group show curated by Shaleen Wadhwana and supported by Somaiya Vidyavihar University in partnership with Carpe Arte and Young Art Support. Kapil holds a BVA and MVA from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.
