STICK NO BILLS!
Art is art because it speaks to us. From prehistoric cave markings to the hip modern galleries, art speaks. Every child instinctively takes up the language of art, all of us do — or did. Then art grew up. Someone sent it to art school. It donned an academic facade of serious exclusivity and sophistication. Art graduated into high society, sipping tall glasses of commerce and art markets. Art was defined, mounted, and hung in its designated place, with its tombstone stuck next to it. (Really, why do they call it ‘tombstone’?) Guesswho’s art breaks these constructs effortlessly and instinctively, like the child. There is formidable skill and fine details, but it is their chronically curious eye that brings critical humour and relatability back to art. It wears no pretensions, and is not afraid to be stripped bare. If art be a reflection of society, then Guesswho holds a most irreverent mirror, unflinching in its deeply subversive thoughts on culture, media, class, politics, and art. In the seasoned tone of a subculture master, this art doesn’t look down at us — it speaks plain truth to us, like an old friend. It whispers jokes, grunts sharp commentary, and changes the subject, as you will see. Guesswho’s work is an in-your-face reminder of what art is meant to be. A beautiful protest. A clarion call to break the frames that restrict the idea of art, and reclaim it for the lonely child inside.
